Praiano — The Hidden Gem of the Amalfi Coast

"Tucked between the glamour of Positano and the grandeur of Amalfi, Praiano is the village every traveller who truly loves the Italian coast eventually discovers — and never forgets. Crystal-clear Blue Flag waters, a legendary west-facing sunset, the best cooking classes on the coast, and private boat tours to Capri departing from your doorstep. This is your complete guide."

Whether you want to spend a morning on La Gavitella beach, join a cooking class overlooking Positano, or take a private boat to Capri, Praiano delivers — without the queues and chaos of its more famous neighbours.

Why Praiano Is the Amalfi Coast's most underrated Village

With just under 2,000 residents, Praiano sits on the cliffs midway between Positano (6 km west) and Amalfi (10 km east). Its name derives from the Latin Plagianum — 'the open sea' — and from almost any point in the village the view proves it: an unobstructed horizon of deep blue framed by dramatic limestone cliffs.

For centuries Praiano was the preferred summer retreat of the Doges of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, who chose it for its cooling sea breezes and panoramic vantage points. Today it retains that same quiet prestige — the rhythm of life here is gentler, the staircases more vertiginous, and the seafood unmistakably fresher.

Its beaches hold the Bandiera Blu (Blue Flag) for water quality year after year — a recognition you feel the moment you swim here.

A Village with Medieval Roots

Between the 10th and 11th centuries, Praiano was the summer getaway for the doges of the Duchy of Amalfi, showing its importance in medieval times. Later, during the Angevin period, the Asciola Tower was built to protect the village from sea attacks.

Over the years, silk production kept the village thriving until the 19th century. Then, with the discovery of coral in the early 1800s, Praiano’s economy shifted toward fishing—and eventually, tourism.

The Best Beaches in Praiano

Praiano is one of the few towns on the Amalfi Coast with multiple distinct beaches — each with its own character, best time of day, and unique way to arrive by sea or by the scenic stairways that descend from the village above. Unlike some nearby towns where a single main beach attracts most visitors, Praiano offers several smaller coves and stretches of shoreline that feel more intimate and authentic.

The most famous is Marina di Praia, a narrow beach set dramatically between high limestone cliffs. Fishing boats line the shore, and in the evening the setting sun reflects softly on the water while local restaurants begin to fill with people arriving by boat. It is one of the most atmospheric spots on the coast.

Further along the coastline lies Gavitella Beach, one of the few places on the Amalfi Coast where you can enjoy sunlight until sunset thanks to its west-facing position. Reached by a long staircase from the village, the beach rewards visitors with spectacular views of Positano and Capri on the horizon. The descent itself becomes part of the experience, revealing the coastline little by little.

Praiano also hides smaller rocky coves and swimming platforms used mostly by locals, perfect for those looking for quieter moments by the sea. These spots are often accessible by boat or by steep paths that wind down through the cliffs, giving the feeling of discovering secret corners of the coast.

Together, these beaches show the many sides of Praiano’s coastline: lively fishing harbors, sun-drenched terraces over the sea, and peaceful coves where the Mediterranean feels wonderfully untouched.

La Gavitella — The Only Beach with Sun Until Sunset

La Gavitella is, without exaggeration, one of the most special beaches on the entire Amalfi Coast. While most beaches here fall into shadow by early afternoon — cut off by the towering cliffs — La Gavitella faces directly west and receives sunlight from dawn to the very last moment of the day. It is the only beach on the coast where you can watch the sun drop into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

From the pebble cove the panorama is postcard-perfect: Positano's pyramid of pastel houses, the Li Galli archipelago, and on clear days the silhouette of Capri on the horizon. The water is crystalline and calm, ideal for swimming and snorkelling throughout the day.

Access on foot: from Piazza San Gennaro, follow Via Masa — a charming alley lined with ceramic fish tiles celebrating Praiano's fishing heritage — to the staircase. There are 413 steps in total. Alternatively, take the free shuttle boat connecting La Gavitella with Marina di Praia and Positano for guests dining at the restaurant.

At the beach you will find La Gavitella Restaurant & Beach Club — a refined spot for lunch, aperitivo or dinner above the sea. The kitchen celebrates local seafood and Campanian produce. The signature dish: totani e patate alla praianese (squid and potato) — a true local classic.

La Gavitella — Beach Club, Restaurant & Cooking Classes

Refined restaurant and beach club in Praiano, with a panorama of Positano, Capri and Li Galli. Reachable by stairs from San Gennaro church, or by shuttle boat from Marina di Praia and Positano.

Marina di Praia — The Heart of Praiano's Sea Life

At the base of the cliff crowned by the Torre a Mare (a 16th-century Saracen watchtower), Marina di Praia is Praiano's main harbour and beach. A compact cove enclosed by dramatic rock walls, the water is intensely blue and sheltered — perfect for swimming at any time of day.

This is also the main departure dock for all Positano Boats excursions from Praiano. No transfer to Positano required — board directly here. The cove is surrounded by excellent seafood restaurants and, built directly into a nearby sea cave, the legendary Africana — one of the most iconic clubs on the Italian coastline.

Cooking Class at La Gavitella — Taste the Amalfi Coast

What better souvenir from Italy than knowing how to make fresh ravioli, tagliatelle and a proper tiramisù from scratch? The La Gavitella Cooking Class is one of the most sought-after experiences on the Amalfi Coast: a small-group session (max 12–15 guests) in a professional kitchen above the sea, guided by local chefs using seasonal Campanian ingredients.

Arrive by the stairs from San Gennaro church in Praiano — or by shuttle boat from Marina di Praia or Positano, which makes the journey part of the experience. Coffee and cornetto on arrival, then the cooking begins: bruschetta, two pasta dishes, and a classic dessert. Everything eaten at a table overlooking Positano and Capri. Classes from €149 pp (3.5h morning) to €169 for the full-day version including beach and lunch.

It’s the perfect destination to experience Italy at a slower pace, surrounded by history, gastronomy, and dreamlike landscapes.

How to Get to Praiano

By bus: SITA operates the Positano–Amalfi line, stopping in Praiano centre. One of the most scenic routes in Italy, but services fill up in July–August. Buy tickets from local newspaper kiosks before boarding.

By car: Praiano sits on the SS163 coastal road, ~6 km east of Positano and ~10 km west of Amalfi. Parking is limited — use the public car parks in the village and take the local minibus or walk down to Marina di Praia or La Gavitella.

By boat: The most spectacular arrival. Positano Boats offers water taxi transfers connecting Praiano with Positano, Amalfi, Capri and beyond throughout the season. Ask us for availability.

When to Visit Praiano

Praiano rewards visitors in every season, but the sweet spots are May–June and September–October: warm sea, extraordinary light, full schedules, and a noticeably more relaxed atmosphere than the peak weeks of July–August.

  • Spring (April–May): Wildflowers on the cliffs, lemon blossoms, very few tourists. Perfect for hiking the Path of the Gods.
  • Early Summer (June): Sea temperature reaching 22–24°C, all boats and restaurants open, before the peak rush. Best month for boat tours.
  • Peak Season (July–August): The coast is at its most vibrant. Book boats, restaurants and parking well in advance.
  • Early Autumn (September–October): Sea still warm (24–26°C), golden late light, harvest season, zero queues. Best value of the year.
  • August 4th — Luminaria di San Domenico: Praiano's most spectacular event — hundreds of torches illuminate Piazza San Gennaro in a glowing mosaic.
