Nestled between the charming villages of Praiano and Conca dei Marini, the Furore Fjord (Fiordo di Furore) stands as one of Italy's most breathtaking natural wonders.
This dramatic gorge, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, carves through towering limestone cliffs and hides a secret beach accessible only by sea or steep pathways. Whether you're planning a boat tour from Positano or simply want to learn about this iconic Amalfi Coast destination, this guide covers everything you need to know.
The Fiordo di Furore is a narrow inlet created over millennia by the erosion of the Schiato torrent, which flows down from the Lattari Mountains. Unlike Scandinavian fjords formed by glaciers, this Mediterranean fjord was shaped by both river and sea water cutting through the soft limestone rock. The result is a dramatic gorge with vertical cliffs rising nearly 200 meters above a tiny pebble beach just 25 meters long.
The most iconic feature is the historic bridge spanning the gorge, which connects the coastal road between Praiano and Amalfi. This bridge serves as the perfect viewpoint and has become one of the most photographed spots on the entire Amalfi Coast.
The fjord's history dates back centuries when a small fishing village thrived in this sheltered cove. During the 17th century, the community experienced unexpected industrial development: the cold, fast-flowing waters of the Schiato torrent powered paper mills and flour mills, contributing to the famous Amalfi paper-making tradition.
The area gained international fame when director Roberto Rossellini and actress Anna Magnani chose Furore for their 1948 film "L'Amore." Today, an Ecomuseum preserves the area's heritage, featuring an herbarium and historical trails documenting the region's agricultural past.
The most spectacular way to experience the Furore Fjord is from the sea. Boat tours departing from Positano with Positano Boats cruise along the stunning coastline, passing La Gavitella beach and Marina di Praia before reaching the fjord. From the water, you'll appreciate the true scale of the cliffs and have the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear turquoise waters.
Our Amalfi Coast boat tours include a photo stop at the fjord, allowing passengers to capture the dramatic scenery with the famous bridge overhead. The captain will position the boat perfectly for photographs and share stories about the area's history and legends.
Visitors can also reach the beach via a steep stairway of approximately 500 steps from the main road. While challenging, the descent rewards you with an intimate experience of this hidden cove. The beach itself, though small, offers remarkably clear water perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
The fjord is stunning year-round, but late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) offer the best conditions for boat tours. During these months, the weather is warm, the sea is calm, and the tourist crowds are more manageable. Summer visits are beautiful but expect more boats and swimmers at the beach.
The Furore Fjord is perfectly positioned for exploring the Amalfi Coast's highlights. From here, boat tours typically continue to the Emerald Grotto (Grotta dello Smeraldo), famous for its stunning green light reflections, and the historic town of Amalfi. Heading west, you'll pass through Praiano toward Positano and the legendary Li Galli islands.
Since 2005, Positano Boats has been guiding visitors to the Amalfi Coast's most spectacular locations. Our private and group boat tours offer the perfect way to discover the Fiordo di Furore along with other coastal gems. Choose from half-day tours focusing on the Amalfi Coast or full-day adventures that include Capri.
