Praiano, Italy: the complete guide to the Amalfi Coast's sunset town 1

Eight kilometres from Positano, a thousand miles from the crowds, lies Praiano, a small town on the Amalfi Coast. Reachable by sea, Positano Boats, which has been sailing the Mediterranean since 2005, is here to show you every inch of this town, from the sea!

Where is Praiano? Location, orientation and why it matters

Praiano occupies the slopes and summit of Capo Sottile, a promontory that pushes south into the Tyrrhenian Sea between Positano and Amalfi, in the Province of Salerno, Campania. The village faces south-west — a detail that shapes everything about it. Unlike Positano, where the cliffs cut off the sunset view earlier in the evening, Praiano watches the sun descend over open water, turning the sea gold and the sky pink until the last possible moment. It is one of the best sunset destinations in all of Italy, and the locals know it.

By road, Praiano is 20 minutes from Positano along the SS163, the legendary coastal highway that clings to the cliff face with more optimism than engineering. By sea — which is how we recommend arriving — Positano Boats can deliver you directly to La Gavitella beach or Marina di Praia in the same time.

The beaches of Praiano: La Gavitella and Marina di Praia

La Gavitella

La Gavitella is the beach Praiano guards most jealously. A small pebble cove sheltered beneath towering limestone walls, it can be reached by descending a long staircase from the road — a descent that rewards the effort with a view that opens up gradually, step by step, until the full drama of the bay is revealed — or, far more elegantly, by arriving directly from the sea. The water is exceptionally clear, the cliffs create natural shade in the afternoon, and the restaurant terrace ( La Gavitella ) above the beach has one of the finest sea views on the entire coast, with Positano visible to the north-west and the Li Galli Islands floating in the middle distance.

Positano Boats uses La Gavitella as a departure point for guests staying on the Praiano side of the coast. It is also a featured stop on several of our Amalfi Coast tours — arriving by boat means stepping ashore at the most beautiful beach on the western coast without touching the road at any point.

Marina di Praia

Marina di Praia is everything a traditional fishing harbour should be. A small, perfectly formed bay enclosed by near-vertical rock walls, it has been used by Praiano's fishermen for centuries — the boats still go out before dawn, and the nets are still spread to dry on the pebble beach alongside the sunbeds.

Marina di Praia is the second departure point for Positano Boats in Praiano. Guests meeting us here begin their tour at sea level, with the cliffs rising on both sides, which is in itself worth the trip.

The sunset town: why Praiano has the best golden hour on the Amalfi Coast

Praiano's orientation is its greatest natural gift. The south-westerly aspect means that on a clear evening — and the evenings are clear for most of the season between May and October — the sun descends directly over the open sea, in full view of the village, painting the water in layers of amber, orange and rose that deepen as the last light fades.

In Positano, the cliffs of Punta Campanella cut off the sun before the show is over. In Amalfi, the town faces east. In Praiano, you get the whole performance. The best seats are at La Gavitella beach — lying on the pebbles with the sea in front and the cliffs behind — or from the deck of a boat, which is what our Sunset tour is designed for. We time the departure from Positano or Praiano to arrive at the Fiordo di Furore or the Li Galli Islands.

Praiano by boat: the perspective of Positano Boats

We have been operating boat tours from Praiano since 2005. Over the years, we’ve seen the Amalfi Coast change around us — more visitors, higher prices compared to other coastal destinations — while Praiano has remained, in many ways, true to itself.

The morning catch is still sold directly from fishermen’s boats at Marina di Praia, and you can still enjoy authentic traditional cuisine in local restaurants.

From the sea, Praiano is one of the most beautiful spots along the entire coast. The outline of Capo Sottile, the white houses overlooking the cliffs, and the many sea-level caves along the shoreline reveal a different side of Praiano — one you simply can’t see from the road, and in our opinion, the best one.

Things to do in Praiano

Hike the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)

The Sentiero degli Dei is one of the great walking routes of southern Italy — a cliff-top trail that links Praiano (via Nocelle) to Agerola, traversing a landscape of Mediterranean scrub, limestone karst and views that feel like being suspended above the coast. The path is well-marked and takes between 3 and 4 hours at a comfortable pace. From Praiano, the access point is in the upper village; the descent into Nocelle, above Positano, is one of the most dramatic finishes of any coastal walk in Europe. The combination of a morning hike and afternoon boat return is a classic Praiano day.

Visit the Africana Famous Club

Opened in 1962 inside a natural sea cave on the Capo Sottile promontory, the Africana Famous Club is one of the most storied nightlife venues in Italy — and one of the most unusual in the world. The main dance floor is built over transparent glass panels beneath which the sea moves, lit from below. The cave walls serve as the décor. It has mooring buoys for guests who prefer to arrive by yacht. Among its documented guests: Jacqueline Kennedy, Gianni Agnelli, Sophia Loren, and what seems like most of the Italian film industry across four decades. It operates through the summer months (typically June to September).

Explore the churches of Praiano

Praiano has two churches worth the visit. The Church of San Gennaro, on the upper road, dates to the 16th century and contains a remarkable majolica-tiled dome — the ceramic tradition of the Amalfi Coast at its most exuberant. The Church of San Luca, on the eastern flank of the village, offers a panoramic terrace that most tourists never reach and a view of the coast that rewards anyone willing to find it. Both are unlocked during morning hours.

Eat like a local: totani e patate alla praianese

Praiano has a small but serious food culture built around the catch of the day and the produce of the terraces above. The dish that every local will tell you to order is totani e patate alla praianese — a braise of red squid (totani) and potatoes in a rich tomato sauce, slow-cooked until the squid surrenders to the liquid. It appears on the menus of La Gavitella restaurant, and half a dozen other places along the coast road. Pair it with local white wine — Falanghina or Fiano d'Avellino.

Where to stay in Praiano

Praiano has a range of accommodation from luxury hotels to self-catering apartments, all at prices significantly below comparable options in Positano. The two standout hotels are Casa Angelina, a design-led clifftop property with a private beach access and a sea-view restaurant, and Hotel Margherita, a more modest option on the main road with a rooftop terrace that serves some of the best aperitivi on the coast.

For those who want more space and local immersion, renting an apartment in the upper village — accessible only by the village's network of staircases — gives the experience of living as a Praiano resident for a week: buying tomatoes at the weekly market, drinking coffee at the bar where the fishermen stop after the morning haul, watching the tourist boats pass below from a terrace that is entirely your own.

Why Praiano is better than Positano for staying (and the numbers that prove it)

This is not a controversial opinion among experienced Amalfi Coast travellers — it is simply the conclusion that most people reach after their first visit. Praiano offers everything that draws people to the coast: dramatic cliffs, crystal water, excellent food, the scent of lemon groves in the evening, and the sound of the sea at night. It does not offer the traffic, the cruise ship crowds in August, the souvenir shop pressure, or the Positano prices.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. Where is Praiano, Italy?

Praiano is a village on the Amalfi Coast in the Province of Salerno, Campania, southern Italy. It is located between Positano (8 km west) and Amalfi (12 km east), perched on the Capo Sottile promontory at roughly 120 metres above sea level, facing south-west over the Tyrrhenian Sea.

2. Is Praiano worth visiting?

Yes — Praiano is widely considered one of the best-kept secrets on the Amalfi Coast. It offers the same dramatic cliffs, clear water, and Mediterranean scenery as Positano and Amalfi, but with significantly fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more authentically local atmosphere. It also has exceptional sunset views due to its south-westerly orientation, two beautiful beaches (La Gavitella and Marina di Praia), and direct access to the Sentiero degli Dei hiking trail.

3. Why is Praiano called the sunset town of the Amalfi Coast?

Praiano faces south-west, meaning the sun sets over the open sea and directly in front of the village — unlike Positano, where the cliffs block the sunset view earlier in the evening. This orientation gives Praiano some of the longest, most dramatic golden hour light on the entire coast, visible from La Gavitella beach, the terrace bars in the village, and from the sea itself.

4. How do you get to Praiano from Positano?

From Positano, Praiano is reachable by SITA bus (line 5100, approximately €1.20, journey time 20 minutes), by taxi (approximately €25–35), or by private boat. The most scenic option is by sea: Positano Boats offers transfers and tours that arrive directly at La Gavitella beach or Marina di Praia, bypassing the coastal road entirely.

5. What is the best beach in Praiano?

Praiano has two main beaches: La Gavitella and Marina di Praia. La Gavitella is considered the more beautiful of the two — a sheltered pebble cove below dramatic cliffs, accessible by a long staircase or by boat, with a restaurant terrace offering panoramic views of Positano and the Li Galli Islands. Marina di Praia is smaller and more enclosed, sitting at the bottom of a dramatic rock gorge, and serves as Praiano's working fishing harbour.

6. Can you take a boat tour from Praiano?

Yes. Positano Boats offers departures from two points in Praiano: Marina di Praia and La Gavitella beach. Guests staying in Praiano can join group tours or private charters without travelling to Positano, including the popular Amalfi Coast day tour, sunset cruises, and day trips to Capri.

7. What is Praiano famous for?

Praiano is famous for three things: its exceptional south-facing sunset views, which have earned it the nickname 'sunset town' of the Amalfi Coast; the Africana Famous Club, a legendary nightclub carved into a sea cave and active since 1962; and La Gavitella, one of the most beautiful hidden beaches on the coast. It is also the access point for the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) hiking trail and the starting point for boat excursions to the Fiordo di Furore and the Li Galli Islands.

8. Is Praiano cheaper than Positano?

Yes — Praiano is significantly more affordable than Positano. Hotel rates in Praiano are typically 30–50% lower than equivalent properties in Positano, restaurant prices are closer to local Italian norms, and the village has none of the luxury boutiques or high-end souvenir shops that drive up the cost of a day in Positano. For travellers wanting the Amalfi Coast experience on a real budget, Praiano is the most recommended base on the western stretch of the coast.
